Berend Bode (German, born 1976) is a contemporary painter known for his
multi-layered images referencing classic films, history and social media.
Born in Bremen, he studied painting and sculpture with David Bade and
Karin Kneffel at the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen. The art of Berend
Bode is a highly complex, highly exciting world of enigmatic ciphers and
carriers of meaning of large surfaces and metaphorical bubbles. Situated
between abstraction and figurativeness, this expressive painting has
formal freedom and narrative multiplicity as its theme.
His favorite subjects are events and people of the 20th and 21 century in
connection with current sorrowful or socially critical events.
His partly spontaneous and gestural brushwork again finds a strong contrast
to the well thought-out real and surreal picture planes. The faces in his
